Update constraints code to support the new _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL EWMH 2003-06-10 Rob Adams <robadams@ucla.edu> Update constraints code to support the new _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL EWMH draft specification. See #86682. Also, fix a bug involving work area invalidation on metacity startup. Fix for #108497. Finally, some minor fixes for full screen windows. * src/window.h: Add new MetaStruts structure to store strut rects for a window. Remove has_struts and do_not_cover flag, and support new MetaStruts instead of the four ints. * src/window.c (meta_window_new): change initialization to work with new struts. Also, move meta_window_update_struts call to after the workspaces are initialized to fix #108497. Remove do_not_cover and related code. (process_property_notify): add strut_partial (update_struts): change function name to meta_window_update_struts and expose in external MetaWindow API. Support partial width struts and the new strut rects. * src/workspace.h: add new GSLists containing pointers to all relevant struts for this workspace. * src/workspace.c (meta_workspace_new): initialize the list of strut rects for this workspace. (meta_workspace_free): free the strut rect lists (ensure_work_areas_validated): support new struts and new strut rect lists. Unleash the per-xinerama work areas. * src/constraints.c (get_outermost_onscreen_positions): Use the current window position along with the new per-workspace strut rects to compute the constraints that apply to a particular window. (constraint_hint_applies_func): don't do hints constraints on fullscreen windows (update_position_limits): for maximized windows use the work areas to set the position limits; for other windows rely on the struts constraints to be computed later in get_outermost_onscreen_positions (meta_window_constrain): don't apply aspect ratio hints to full screen windows * src/display.c (meta_display_open): add _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL atom (meta_rectangle_equal): new helper function for MetaRectangles (event_queue_callback): #ifndef out if USE_GDK_DISPLAY not set to avoid compiler warning * src/display.h: add atom_net_wm_strut_partial, and add meta_rectangle_equal. * src/screen.c (meta_screen_rect_intersects_xinerama): change _window_intersects_ to _rect_intersects_ which is more useful now. (meta_screen_resize_func): update struts on windows with struts since struts are relative to the screen size, and this function is called when the screen size updates. * src/screen.h (meta_screen_rect_intersects_xinerama): change _window_intersects_ to _rect_intersects_ which is more useful now. * src/window-props.c (meta_display_init_window_prop_hooks): add hook for strut_partial * src/tools/metacity-window-demo.c: Support partial-width struts on the dock window tests for metacity testing purposes.

/* The way this code works was suggested by Owen Taylor.
*
* For any move_resize, we determine which variables are "free
2002-07-24 23:23:51 +00:00
* variables" and apply constraints in terms of those. During the move
* resize, we only want to modify those variables; otherwise the
* constraint process can have peculiar side effects when the size and
* position constraints interact. For example, resizing a window from
* the top might go wrong when position constraints apply to the top
* edge, and result in the bottom edge moving downward while the top
* stays fixed.
*
* After selecting the variables we plan to vary, we define
* each constraint on the window in terms of those variables.
*
* Trivial example, say we are resizing vertically from the top of the
* window. In that case we are applying the user's mouse motion delta
* to an original size and position, note that dy is positive to
* resize downward:
*
* new_height = orig_height - dy;
* new_y = orig_y + dy;
*
* A constraint that the position can't go above the top panel would
* look like this:
*
2002-07-24 19:52:21 +00:00
* new_y >= screen_top_bound
*
* Substitute:
*
2002-07-24 19:52:21 +00:00
* orig_y + dy >= screen_top_bound
*
* Find the "boundary point" by changing to an equality:
*
* orig_y + dy = screen_top_bound
*
* Solve:
*
* dy = screen_top_bound - orig_y
*
2002-07-24 19:52:21 +00:00
* This dy is now the _maximum_ dy and you constrain dy with that
* value, applying it to both the move and the resize:
*
2002-07-24 19:52:21 +00:00
* new_height = orig_height - dy;
* new_y = orig_y + dy;
*
* This way the constraint is applied simultaneously to size/position,
* so you aren't running the risk of constraining one but still
* changing the other. i.e. we've converted an operation that may
* modify both the Y position and the height of the window into an
* operation that modifies a single variable, dy. That variable is
* then constrained, rather than the constraining the Y pos and height
* separately. This is a rather complicated fix for an obscure bug
* that happened when resizing a window and encountering a constraint
* such as the top edge of the screen.
*
*/
/* To adjust for window gravity, such as a client moving itself to the
* southeast corner, we want to compute the gravity reference point
* - (screen_width,screen_height) in the SE corner case - using the
* size the client had in its configure request. But then we want
* to compute the actual position we intend to land on using
* the real constrained dimensions of the window.
*
* So for a window being placed in the SE corner and simultaneously
* resized, we get the gravity reference point, then compute where the
* window should go to maintain that ref. point at its current size
* instead of at the requested size, and conceptually move the window
* to the requested ref. point but at its current size, without
* applying any constraints. Then we constrain it with the top and
* left edges as the edges that vary, with a dx/dy that are the delta
2002-07-24 19:52:21 +00:00
* from the current size to the requested size.
*
* This method applies to any ConfigureRequest that does a simultaneous
* move/resize.
*
2002-07-24 23:23:51 +00:00
* We use the same method to e.g. maximize a window; if the window is
* maximized, we want to MOVE_VERTICAL/MOVE_HORIZONTAL to the top
* center of the screen, then RESIZE_BOTTOM and
* RESIZE_HORIZONTAL_CENTER. i.e. essentially NorthGravity.

* If we keep the old metacity rule where a window can be offscreen by
* offscreen_width, then the math works out that left/top resizes are not
* constrained. If we instead have a rule where the window can never be offscreen,
* you get the following:
2002-07-24 19:52:21 +00:00
*
* new_x >= nw_x + left_width + titlebar_width_offscreen
* orig_x + dx >= nw_x + left_width + titlebar_width_onscreen
* dx >= nw_x + left_width + titlebar_width_onscreen - orig_x
2002-07-24 19:52:21 +00:00
*
* i.e. the minimum dx is: nw_x + left_width + titlebar_width_onscreen - orig_x
2002-07-24 19:52:21 +00:00
*
* We could have a more complicated rule that constrains only if the current
* offscreen width is positive, thus allowing something more like the old
* behavior, but not doing that for now.

/* to handle struts, we get the list of workspaces for the window
* and traverse all the struts in each of the cached strut lists for
* the workspaces. Note that because the workarea has already been
* computed, these strut lists should already be up to date. This function
* should have good performance since we call it a lot.
